God’s first instruction on being holy in the Torah is for each person to honor their parents (that's kibud av v’eim in Hebrew). It’s right there in the 10 Commandments!
Ancient rabbis taught that we revere our parents when we do not sit in their chair or contradict what they say while modern rabbis emphasize the importance of building positive and lasting bonds and showing honor through deeds. But it’s not a one way street, parents have obligations to their children as well; to teach their children values, to make sure they have skills to succeed and even to teach them how to swim!
