A Time to Hope

A PJ Library Family Guide for Hanukkah Through Purim

What is the PJ Library Passover River Ride?

The Passover River Ride is an in-the-envelope engagement piece that was sent with March 2019 books to all PJ Library subscriber families in US and Canada. It is a large (1 foot x 2-1/2 feet) poster that illustrates the Passover story in ten scenes, laid out along the winding banks of the Nile River. PJ Library created the River Ride as a storytelling tool that allows children and parents to tell, explore, and discuss the Passover story. A digital version of the Passover River Ride, along with other PJ Library Passover resources for families raising young children can be found on the Passover Hub.

What is the River Ride Passover Walk?

Inspired by the StoryWalk® Project, PJ Library’s River Ride Passover Walk presents the Passover story through twenty individual printable posters – ten illustrations from the River Ride and ten corresponding pages of text. This tool gives PJ Library Program Professionals and educators an opportunity to design interactive experiences for families based on the River Ride as part of their Passover programming.

How can I use the River Ride Passover Walk?

The River Ride Passover Walk pages can be downloaded, printed, and transformed into posters or laminated signs to be displayed along a trail (outdoors, if weather permits, or indoors, throughout a building or large space).

Invite families to follow the trail, pausing at each station to read the words and examine the pictures. Consider adding activities, games and conversation prompts from the list offered below  to one or more of the stations.

PJ Library looks forward to learning more about how communities utilize the River Ride Passover Walk this year, and plans to develop additional resources in the future. For questions and comments, contact Amy Meltzer, PJ Library Engagement Officer.

Print and Display Tips:

  • Enlarge each page up to 150% (25.5” x 16.5”)

  • Post the text above, below or alongside the picture.

  • For outdoor use, print on card stock and laminate/place in lamination pockets, and attach to stakes.

  • Make sure to display at a height appropriate for children!

  • Spread out the stations far enough for a stroll, but close enough to easily find the next one.

  • Use page two (the complete story) as an optional handout rather than displaying on the trail.
