PJ Library's Author Incentive Award

PJ Library is invited into more than 160,000 North American homes every month, and this brings with it a special responsibility to consistently provide families with the highest quality titles. But sometimes we have difficulty finding enough exceptional Jewish children’s books to satisfy the needs of our program. And so we are turning to you. Here’s what we propose:

For each new story submitted to PJ Library from July 22, 2016, through December 31, 2018, that is accepted by the Book Selection Committee for use in our program, we will present the author with $2,000 as our way of showing appreciation for contributing to the PJ Library mission. This award is truly an award – it is separate from and in addition to any monies received by the author from a publisher.

Stories may be submitted by anyone, including authors, agents, and publishers. Multiple stories by one author are eligible. The only disqualifying factor is if the story is already available in the trade market or has previously been considered by PJ Library’s Book Selection Committee – that is to say, it must be new.

Learn more about our book selection guidelines and submit your manuscript via the instructions below. We look forward to reading your story!

How to Submit a Manuscript

Books or manuscripts that meet our criteria may be submitted for review.  It is highly preferable that submissions be made electronically by sending a PDF or Word document to pjlibrary@hgf.org.

You may also mail at least four (but preferably six) hard copies:
PJ Library Book Selection Committee
67 Hunt Street, Suite 100
Agawam, MA 01001

Please send complete contact information including name, address, email address and phone number with each submission. The Book Selection Committee will read, consider, and discuss all stories that meet the requirements listed above. An email acknowledging receipt of the book or manuscript will be sent to the submitter.

If the committee accepts a book or manuscript, the Book Selection Committee chair will contact the submitter to discuss next steps.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the high volume of submissions received, we are able to contact only those authors whose book or manuscript is selected. At this time, most reviews take place within 12 weeks of receipt of the book. We respectfully ask that authors and agents do not contact PJ Library to check the status of a submission.

Jewish Children's Literature Author Retreat

PJ Library is proud to be sponsoring Tent: Children's Literature, a weeklong retreat for emerging and midcareer writers of Jewish picture books, early chapter books, and middle-grade fiction. Emerging and midcareer writers will spend a week at the Yiddish Book Center reading and writing, workshopping new projects, and talking about craft and the history of Jewish storytelling. The program offers intensive, multi-day workshops led by prominent critics and editors, as well as seminars on Jewish history, literature, and cultural materials. The application for 2017 is now closed, but for more information, visit the Tent: Children's Literature Author Retreat program page.
