Why We Chose This Book: The Mouse Who Danced the Hora

As it turns out, it’s not just children who are curious about wedding celebrations – mice are too! The PJ Library Book Selection Committee was thrilled to work with author Pamela Mayer and illustrator Christine Davenier to bring the story of Tillie Mouscovitz, an enthusiastic dancing mouse, to PJ Library subscriber families.

As mice go, Tillie Mouscovitz is a very memorable one. She lives in the wall of Temple Sholom’s social hall, her favorite song is “Hava Nagila,” and she loves to dance the hora!

Week after week, Tillie watches from her mouse house as klezmer bands fill the hall with beautiful music and families throw the most wonderful parties. “But for a mouse it’s not,” Tillie sadly muses, as she watches.

On one very special wedding day though, Tillie just can’t help herself. And as the congregation sings “Hava nagila, hava nagila, hava nagila, v’nismecha!” and the bride and groom are swept up above the crowd in their chairs, Tillie is overwhelmed with joy. She scampers right into the middle of the hora circle! But a mouse on the dance floor is quite the surprise, and some of the wedding guests dance (or sprint) right out of the venue. Poor Tillie!

Read The Mouse Who Danced the Hora to find out how Tillie Mouscovitz wins over the bride and groom and joins the wedding celebration.
