Ethiopian musical instruments include stringed instruments like the single-stringed masenqo and the five-stringed krar, wooden or bamboo flutes like the washint, and, of course, drums like the nagarit. Here’s an easy African-style drum you can make and play.
This Activity Works With These Books
Supplies
- Crayons, markers, or paint
- Paper (recycled paper – especially ripped pages from damaged books work great!)
- Scissors
- Coffee Can
- Glue
Directions
- Draw horizontal lines on the paper. Use crayons, markers, or paint to decorate each section with a different colorful pattern.
- Use scissors to cut the paper to fit around the sides of the can.
- Glue the paper to the sides of the can.
- Use your hands to start drumming!
