CELEBRATING PICTURE BOOKS is something PJ Library is always eager to do. So, when one of our publishing partners,
Candlewick Press, announced its “We Believe in Picture Books” campaign for 2012, we were happy to participate.
ONE VIDEO EACH DAYCandlewick’s ‘We Believe in Picture Books’ campaign began this past summer, August 2012. As
reported by the Children’s Book Council, the campaign includes “a yearlong video celebration of picture books feature Candlewick's authors illustrators, staff, family, and friends.”
The children’s book publisher will post one video each day for 365 days. The videos are being shared via social media (
Twitter.com/Candlewick) as well as the company’s blog,
ReadingStartsHere.com.
“Picture books by nature are performances, and all participants have an essential role,” states Candlewick on its blog. “There’s the author and illustrator (sometimes the same person playing different parts). There are editors and designers working hard behind the scenes to make sure their efforts are invisible. There’s the reader and listener, maybe a parent encircling a child with the book on her lap, or a teacher holding a spread aloft. Then there’s the book itself, a still object that spurs the child to action: pacing the page-turns, ‘reading’ the pictures, voicing a soundtrack, acting out scenes, and especially, using the power of imagination to fill in the spaces.”
PJ LIBRARY’S CONTRIBUTIONTo join in the celebration, and to showcase why we too “believe in picture books,” PJ Library tapped PJ Goes to School director Lisa Litman to give us a little “somethin’ somethin’” about one of our favorite Candlewick Press books,
Naamah and the Ark at Night.
Naamah and the Ark at Night is written by
Susan Campbell Bartoletti and illustrated by Holly Meade. It is a PJ Library selection in the
Bagels & Lox (2 to 3 Years) age group. It tells the story of Naamah, Noah’s wife, who sings and soothes all the inhabitants of the ark on a dark and stormy night.
