Shaboom! Episode 4: Get With The Giving

PJ Library has partnered with BimBam to bring a fun, educational, webseries, Shaboom! to life. If your kids love Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood or Little Einsteins, they'll love Shaboom!  The show makes use of the same playful, educational, vibe but with the bonus of Jewish values and themes built in to each story. In this week's episode we learn about the value of tzedakah.

While many people think of tzedakah as charity, the word actually means "justice," specifically, doing the right things by helping people or causes in need. In this week's episdoe the Plony's learn that being generous and giving doesn't just feel good - it's part of our unique, Jewish heritage.

As a parent, modeling charitable acts is a great way to teach your child the value of tzedakah, and studies have found that it leads to marked increases in children's self-esteem and feelings of empowerment. When your kids are included in tzedakah projects, they discover that they can make a difference in the world.

There are lots of ways to do tzedakah, but the most common way is giving money to the poor or other worthwhile causes. Tzedakah can also include donating food, clothing, and other necessities, or volunteering one's time to assist the needy. You can also kickstart a conversation about tzedakah by  reading a story like How Dalia Put A Big Yellow Comforter Inside a Tiny Blue Box or by listening to a tzedakah-themed song.
