This year marks a special milestone, the 100th anniversary of Jewish Book Month, a special program from the Jewish Book Council. It all began in 1925 when Boston librarian Fanny Goldstein launched Jewish Book Week to celebrate Jewish stories, strengthen our community, and share the richness of Jewish life and identity. Her vision flourished into the monthlong celebration we know today, bringing Jewish literature into homes and communities across North America.
As part of the celebrations, PJ Library is thrilled to share curated book recommendations from beloved Jewish authors. Today’s list comes from author, cartoonist, and fryer of the best latkes in Canada, Alan Silberberg!
Pssst: PJ staff interjecting here. Since Alan is too modest to do it himself, we highly recommend that all kids and kids at heart check out his books: Meet the Latkes, Meet the Hamantaschen, Meet the Matzah and P is For Pastrami: The ABCs of Jewish Food. Okay, here’s Alan’s list:

This is a wonderfully silly (and sweet) story about two sisters who go a little bananas trying to impress a new neighbor. Kids who love a food-themed story with a dose of hi jinks will get a kick out of this one.

How does the truth reveal itself? When I was a kid I loved detective stories (that’s why I created a picture book with anthropomorphic cookie detectives) and this one is a great modern addition for kids who are curious about the world and people around them.

Erica Perl and I met on a PJ Library–sponsored trip and have had the chance since then to collaborate on lots of great projects and to help other authors and creatives. This charming book of hers encourages families to add an extra night to their Hanukkah celebrations for good deeds and acts of kindness — the world can always use more of that!

I’m a big fan of stories that help kids feel confident in being themselves, standing up for others, and speaking up for what is right.
