The PJ Our Way Book Selection Committee is always looking for stories that pull readers in with a compelling plot and give them something real to think about. Two Tribes does both — with a brave main character, meaningful Jewish moments, and an age-appropriate introduction to how prejudice can show up in everyday life.
Twelve-year-old Mia is getting ready for her bat mitzvah in Southern California — but she’s also desperate to connect with her Muscogee dad in Oklahoma. When a thoughtless comment at her Jewish day school makes Mia feel even more “other,” she starts asking bigger questions about identity, family, and what it means to belong. After her bat mitzvah, Mia makes a bold (and secret) plan to travel across the country, hoping the trip will help her understand every part of who she is. This engaging graphic novel is inspired by the author’s own life and family.
School Library Journal gave Two Tribes a starred review, calling it “a must-purchase for young readers everywhere on how to learn about, be empowered by, and embrace one’s identity.”
One PJ Our Way reader noted, “This book was very intriguing, with an exciting plot, making it hard to put down! Also, it was a graphic novel, so it was an easy, eye-catching read with nice illustrations. It showed courage and perseverance, with many references to Jewish culture and to Muscogee Nation culture, with a dash of mischievousness and longing.”
This book is perfect for fans of Chunky, The Whole Story of Half a Girl, and Not Your All-American Girl. (Please note that the PJ Our Way team recommends this title for ages 10 and up).
