HELPING THE NEXT GENERATION of Jewish people to connect with the traditions and values of Judaism is at the heart of the PJ Library book program. For another nonprofit organization, JChoice, the mission is very similar.
As an online “tzedakah Network,” JChoice.org aims to “empower the next generation of contributors to learn and experience the mitzvah of tzedakah and become more thoughtful in their relationship to society.”
The website and social media platform does so by helping its visitors find, evaluate, and support meaningful causes. For example, new and returning philanthropists can visit the “Explore Causes” area of the site and search by Jewish value.
This month, PJ Library became a proud (and fortunate!) participant on JChoice.org.
OLDER CHILDREN & PARENTS ON JCHOICEJChoice is an ideal way for older children and young adults to be introduced to charitable giving. It presents an online, interactive forum that facilitates learning through curiosity.
On JChoice, older children (especially those approaching Bar or Bat Mitzvah age) can involve themselves with tzedakah by:
- Investigating and supporting meaningful causes of their choice that they care about.
- Opting to blog about their tzedakah experiences (and share their own mitzvah project ideas and Divrei Torah) on the JChoice social network.
- Learn to create and share videos outlining their philanthropic experience or documenting the causes and Jewish values of certain nonprofit programs.
For parents concerned about online predators or personal information-sharing, JChoice’s young philanthropists communicate and give donations using a pseudonym in the form of a made-up screen name. All personal information (full name, for example) is kept private.
Parents are welcome to create their own profile to “monitor” minors. They may also read more on the “Note for Parents” page or via “The JMix” section of the website, which spotlights the creative efforts of young philanthropists.
To give to PJ Library via JChoice, visit the PJ Library page on JChoice.org and select “Give to this Cause.”
