How to Open a Pomegranate

Overhead shot of a person opening a pomegranate

Pomegranates go way back in Jewish history — they're one of the seven native species of ancient Israel and are a traditional food at Rosh Hashanah. Some people think that the apple in the Garden of Eden was actually a pomegranate! Pomegranate seeds are delicious, but getting at them can be tricky. Try the technique outlined below.

Supplies

  • Pomegranate
  • Knife
  • Bowl of water

Directions

  1. Cut the fruit in half vertically from stem end to flower end (a grown-up’s job). Then cut each half in two again.
  2. Place the pomegranate halves in a big bowl of water.
  3. Dig your fingers into the fruit to separate the seeds (called arils) from the white fleshy parts (albedo). The seeds will sink to the bottom of the bowl.
  4. Remove the floating parts, then drain the bowl. You’ll be left with a generous pile of glistening red seeds.
  5. Enjoy!
