Jewish Community Events for Super Bowl Sunday

MORE THAN 108 MILLION PEOPLE tuned in to last year’s Super Bowl, according to The Nielsen Company. So, chances are many of your friends and family members will be glued to their sets this Sunday, as the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII.

If football isn’t your thing — but all your best friends have dates with your sofas — consider participating in a local Jewish community activity or event. Visit the website of your area Federation or JCC or call your local PJ Library coordinator to inquire about scheduled events.

 

NON-FOOTBALL FUN
Here are some examples of off-the-field Sunday happenings planned around North America. They go to show that not quite everyone will be wrapped up in football this Sunday.

  • Shoresh Food Conference Toronto foodies can join local rabbis, farmers, activists, and students for a full-day conference deeply exploring the intersections between Jewish tradition and contemporary food issues.

 

  • Tzedakah Experience 2014 — The Detroit sixth-graders of Temple Israel, along with their families, will “go shopping in the Mitzvah Mall” for community-wide, age-appropriate volunteer activities and participate in a “Change Matters” tzedakah collection.

 

  • “Jammie Jam” Event — Hosted at Bubbles Academy in Chicago, the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago “Joyfully Jewish Programs” invites families to enjoy a “Jammie Jam.” The morning will include a kiddie concert with Bubbles entertainer, bedtime arts and crafts, a slumber party storytime, and milk and cookies.

 

  • “Super Bowl-ing” Event — PJ Library Greater Washington DC is inviting families to have a “Super Bowl” of their own prior to the big game. Interested families will gather at Bowl America in Gaithersburg. Those who donate gently worn shoes (to then be given to Planet Aid and local shelters) will receive free bowling shoe rental.

 

  • One Book Event — Readers in the Lexington, KY community can join a book-based discussion with Professor Tikva Meroz-Aharoni at the Tates Creek Public Library. Read The Wanting by Michael Lavigne and join the conversation.

 

  • Hebrew Storytime — Children, ages 2 to 5 years, in the Boulder, CO community hear interactive stories and participate in art, cooking, music, or craft activities related to the weekly Hebrew story.  

 

  • JCC All-Camp Fair — Community members of the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston will be gather for a day of camp exploration. It’s a chance to meet the camp directors of area day, overnight, and specialty programs.

 

  • Make ’n Take Fun — Hosted by PJ Library North Shore and the Lappin Foundation, families in Massachusetts’ North Shore can enjoy Jewish stories, movement, craft and snack.

 

  • Hebrew-Language Children’s Books — Communities in various cities, from Atlanta to New York City to San Diego, are hosting their own respective Sifriyat Pijama b’America read-aloud events.
