Accompanied by a wise, and wisecracking, goat, a boy travels back in time 3,000 years, stopping at various Passover seders (ritual meals) in hopes of finding his family’s missing afikomen (a special piece of matzah) and finally ending their seder. (You can’t finish the seder without the afikomen, and his long-suffering family has been at the table for a whopping six months!) By the end, the boy has gained a deeper appreciation of his family and the enduring traditions of Passover. It’s an entertaining tale, and the layered, squiggly lines of the black-and-white illustrations suit its madcap spirit, but ultimately, it’s a moving story about the strength and resilience of the Jewish people.
The Jewish Book Council’s review of One Little Goat noted, “Like the Haggadah itself, the narrative and visual richness of this highly recommended, inventive graphic novel invites repeated readings, each one perhaps different from all the others.”
The PJ Our Way Book Selection Committee is always looking for engaging, creative takes on ancient stories, and One Little Goat delivers! Our kid reviewers loved it, too. One reader said, “My favorite part was when the goat told the child to think in the perspectives of his siblings, like the baby who threw the afikomen, his ‘evil’ sister, or his simple brother. I learned that Passover still exists, because thinking and asking questions can be like freedom.”
This book is perfect for fans of The Queen of Persia, Shield of the Maccabees, and Out of Egypt. (Please note that the PJ Our Way team recommends this title for ages 10 and up).
