‘The Golem’s Latkes’ Wins a National Jewish Book Award

Jewish Book CouncilTHE JEWISH BOOK COUNCIL announced this month that PJ Library selection The Golem’s Latkes, written by Eric A. Kimmel and illustrated by Aaron Jasinski, has been chosen as a winner of the 2011 National Jewish Book Award. The title won the category of Illustrated Children’s Book, receiving the Louis Posner Memorial Award.


The presentation of the National Jewish Book Awards will be held at a public gala ceremony Wednesday, March 14 at the Center for Jewish History in New York City.


NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD
The Golem’s Latkes Wins a 2011 National Jewish Book AwardThe Jewish Book Council (JBC) began the National Jewish Book Awards in 1950. Awards are presented across 18 categories.


The goal of the award, according the JBC website is to “select a quality book in their respective category that will appeal to a broad reading audience.


THE GOLEM’S LATKES
Kimmel’s The Golem’s Latkes tells the story of Rabbi Loew, who goes on a trip to visit the emperor, leaving his housemaid in charge. While he is away, a golem, a creature made from clay, comes to life and creates more latkes than the city can contain.


PJ Library families in the Egg Matza (5 to 6 Years) age group in 2011 received the book in November, in preparation for Hanukkah.
