Here is an easy Rosh Hashanah recipe that your child can make on their own (or with minimal supervision): an apple mug cake! Perfect for Rosh Hashanah, this mug cake comes together in less than five minutes and uses easy-to-find ingredients. It’s also easy to make dairy-free. We’ve included a version that uses pre-made cake mix as well as a “from scratch” variation.

Ingredients
- Cooking spray (optional)
- 6 tablespoons of premade boxed cake mix*
- Vanilla, yellow, angel food work best – or try a combination of all three!
- 2 teaspoons of apple sauce
- 3 tablespoons of water or non-dairy milk
- Apple pie spice or pumpkin spice (optional)
- *See below for a quick recipe for how to make your own mug cake mix
Preparation
- Lightly coat a microwave-safe mug with cooking spray
- In the mug, combine all of the ingredients and mix until smooth.
- Microwave on high for one minute and thirty seconds
- (Every microwave is different, some will work best at one minute and others will take up to two minutes. You know your mug cake is done when it pulls away from the sides of the mug just a little bit and a fork stuck through the middle comes out clean).
- Let mug cake sit for one minute to cool
- Eat and enjoy
Mug Cake Mix from Scratch:
Use a fork to stir together:
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
