Create a Kindness Wheel: An Easy Yom Kippur Preparation Activity for Children

A DIY kindness wheel

Yom Kippur has a unique rhythm all its own. When we begin Yom Kippur, our focus is on different ways we’ve messed up in the past year. As the day goes on, the focus shifts, and we imagine ourselves growing into better people. We imagine the world as a better place, with each of us playing an important role.

Yom Kippur is a great time to think about ways to show kindness to the people we care about. Here’s a craft to help encourage the process.

This Activity Works With These Books

Hank on First book cover
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse book cover
Sam and Charlie (and Sam Too!) book cover

Supplies

  • Paper plates
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Brass paper fastener
  • Piece of thin cardboard

Directions

  1. Using the marker or crayon, divide the back of the paper plate into pie-shaped wedges.
  2. Write one person’s name inside each wedge.
  3. Cut an arrow shape out of the thin cardboard.
  4. Use the brass fastener to attach your cardboard arrow to the center of the plate.
  5. Spin the arrow! Whoever it lands on, you then get to decide on an act of kindness to do for that person.
  6. Repeat often!
