JDAIM Events Round-up

Jewish Disability Awareness MonthWelcome to another PJ Library Events Round-up! February is Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM).

PJ Library actively supports JDAIM by participating in the JDAIM Reads program. We partnered with the Jewish Special Education International Consortium to develop and promote disability awareness programming for families, developed around the PJ Library selection The Mitten String.

In addition, PJ Library program professionals, families, and communities participated by sharing stories, starting conversations, and holding community events.

Read on to see how three PJ Library communities participated in JDAIM '16.

PJ Library in Philadelphia, jkidphilly and Whole Community Inclusion went to the National Museum of American Jewish History for a sensory-friendly playdate and story time with President George Washington.

The community is also working on an Expressive Visual Art Gallery all month. Children and teens from schools, camps and youth groups across the Greater Philadelphia area are invited to participate. Learn more here.

PJ Library in Toronto held an inclusive children’s storytelling workshop with playwright Alex Bulmer. Alex facilitated interactive story time and introduced the children to her guide dog, Zeus. The children also heard PJ Library stories and made crafts together. The children made a picture of their name in American Sign Language and practiced signing their names. Thank you to Liviya Mendelsohn for the photos.

PJ Library in Baltimore joined their community for a month of JDAIM-focused events programming. Yael Zelinger, Disability and Inclusion Associate at the Louise D. and Morton J. Macks Center for Jewish Education ran a B*More Inclusive Disability Awareness Experience at the Weinberg Park Heights JCC Early Childhood Center. The children learned sign language and participated in a variety of activities.

As JDAIM comes to a close we’ll be highlighting even more events from PJ Library communities. Check back next week for another events round-up. We'll be looking at some communities who used the PJ selection, The Mitten String in their programming. If you’d like to be featured, share your photos with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Be sure to tag them #pjlibrary.

PJ Library offers special needs enrollment. If you have or know of a child with any special learning needs who is older than the oldest age group of their PJ Library community, but who may nevertheless benefit from the PJ Library materials offered, please contact your local PJ Community Program Professional. We welcome the child's enrollment in any age group deemed appropriate.
