PJ LIBRARY IS A PROGRAM the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF), but it’s not the only program. This month, we are excited to introduce to PJ parents and families the latest HGF program, Voices & Visions (voices-visions.org).
Voices & Visions is a Jewish arts initiative aimed at giving “vision” to Jewish “voices” of the past and present. It has done this by commissioning a series of two-dimensional poster designs, each with imagery that reflects and symbolizes the wisdom of a particular Jewish quote.
The Voices & Visions poster series was an idea conceived by Harold Grinspoon. He was inspired by the early- to mid-20th century advertisements created by the Container Corporation of America, a corrugated box manufacturer. Specifically, the inspirational posters came from Container Corp.’s “America’s Great Ideas of Modern Man” series.
“The Voices & Visions initiative is about putting visual images together with great Jewish thinkers past and present to inspire conversation and instill Jewish pride,” says HGF executive director Joanna Ballantine. “Every quote is meant to be inspiring and provocative and deeply rooted in Judaism.”
THE PJ LIBRARY CONNECTION
While Voices & Visions is a program independent of PJ Library, the two programs share several goals. Just as PJ books provide a conduit for Jewish conversations in the home, so too will Voices & Visions posters inspire such moments.
“We know that people respond in different ways to art,” says PJ Library director Marcie Greenfield Simons. “These projects stimulate thought and, I believe, conversations about our history, our heritage, our text, and our wisdom.”
She adds, “Being engaged with these posters, just like being engaged in the PJ Library books, will really help people think about being Jewish, feel good about being Jewish, and feel wonderment at where our future is going.”
