To make your bag, simply use strips of decorative duct tape to cover the outside of the plastic bag. Then write “Afikomen” in marker. Now you can add a few stickers or glitter glue or other decorations. Now your afikomen bag is ready for some matzah and for a game of hide-and-seek!

In the Passover haggadah, the written guide used at the seder to retell the story of the Exodus, there is a section near the beginning called Ha Lachma Anya, in which guests are invited to the seder. Many years ago, Jews would stand at their open doorways and literally invite people in off the street to join in the Passover meal with their family. This tradition of open hospitality is a hallmark of Judaism, a value known as hachnasit orchim or welcoming guests. Here are some other wonderful books about welcoming guests during the seder:

Episode Notes

Families have different fun ways of involving the kids throughout the seder, from rewarding questions about the Exodus with treats to acting out the Passover story. As Jamie and Claire tell the pirate, the seder can’t end without finding the afikomen, a special piece of matzah that is hidden during the meal. This is also often the domain of the little ones, who race to find the hidden matzah.
