Making Challah for ShabbatWHAT IS CHALLAH? According to the website, MyJewishLearning, Challah is "the Jewish Sabbath-and-holiday bread." Challah is "surrounded by folklore and tradition and loaded with symbolism."

In the August 2012 PJ Library book selection, Beni's Family Treasury by Jane Breskin Zalben, the main character Beni celebrates Jewish holidays throughout the year with his family and friends. He enjoys adventures on Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Purim, and Passover.

For PJ Goes to School director Lisa Litman, the book reminded her of her own Jewish holiday experiences — many of which included challah. This, in turn, prompted her to try her hand at making challah for the first time.
