RUSSIAN FAMILIES in Montreal, Canada will be the focus of a new PJ Library-associated engagement effort. This year, Federation CJA and its Generations Fund has given extra money PJ Library Montreal for the purpose of reaching out specifically to Russian families in the area.
The Canadian Jewish News reporter Janice Arnold writes in her story “PJ Library Reaches Out to Russian Immigrants” [March 26, 2015], “Federation CJA is stepping up its outreach to this [Russian] population, and it is using the lure of books and music — two things Russians traditionally appreciate.”
“150 children of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) have been added to PJ Library’s recipients,” Arnold writes, adding that the goal is to “increase that to 200 by June and to 300 within two years.”
This Russian focus dovetails with HGF’s own Russian engagement efforts, which began in New York.
In a separate article, “Program Brings Jewish Identity to Story Time,” Montreal Gazette reporter Marian Scott paraphrases Federation CJA West Island Director Maia Cooper: “Promoting Jewish heritage is an ongoing concern in an increasingly multicultural society where many Jews marry out of the faith.”
